I started raising lionheads thinking I really liked the breed, but as I started learning more about it I kept coming across cases where I though "oh that's pretty, I like it" only to get told "that's a disqualification criteria" or "that rabbit isnt pure cause that trait is wrong". Over time, people trying to tell me what's right or not for the standard breed got to me and I decided 'standard' is not what I want to do. Thus came the idea of creating a variant breed, where I could enjoy all those beautiful colors and traits that I liked.

About Mirage Lionheads

Features

Mirage lionheads should have the following traits:

- Fluffy ears, some tassel like english angoras is acceptable.
- They should have fun colors. Black rabbits are accepted only if they are not "fully" black (aka vienna mark, broken or otter is ok).
- Astrex is accepted as a variant
- Weight should be between 3.5 and 6 lbs, early english angora mixes will be bigger and thats ok
- Tans should have brown eyes, but for other colors blue eyes are preffered.
- Red eyes are a nono

Races used in the process of making this variant will be lionhead, english angora, tan

The breed is still in it's very early stages so the curent mirage lionheads are still closer to the standard at the moment, but these are guidelines to what I am striving to acheive.

Color projects

Vienna oasis

Status : ongoing

This color pattern is caused by the vienna gene wich causes blue eyes.

The ideal of the pattern should have a white mane and a dark body.

The rabbit should have blue eyes.

The way the white of a vienna mark is acheived is random. So, while I have several vienna carriers in my herd it might take a long time before a true vienna oasis is acheived.

Bush fire

Status : on hold

This color pattern is similar to the otter pattern exept the lighter areas are a bright reddish orange. In many breed it is refered to as a 'tan' pattern

I will acheive this color by crossing with the tan breed wich has the strongest color of this kind. From my knowledge this color doesn't exist in lionheads.

Astrex

Status : Suprise me

I'm not breeding for it but it's fun when it shows up.

This is a fur type variant, not a color.

Astrex causes the coat to become curly. On a lionhead this results in a poodle fur texture.

The astrex coat is not the main goal of the mirage lionheads but rather should be a fun variant from time to time.
